In 1868, Richard Cadbury introduced decorated boxes of chocolates in the shape of a heart for Valentine’s Day. Once the chocolates had been enjoyed, the beautiful boxes could be kept and used to store love letters, photographs and other sentimental keepsakes.

The heart-shaped chocolate box helped establish a tradition that continues today: giving chocolate as a tangible expression of romantic love.

Why chocolate feels so romantic

Part of chocolate’s appeal lies in the experience it creates.

There is the anticipation of opening the wrapping, the aroma of cocoa and the feeling of chocolate slowly melting. It encourages us to pause and enjoy something purely for pleasure.
